Ireland Extends Temporary Protection for Ukrainian and Other Beneficiaries to March 2027
In a welcome move for thousands of displaced people living and working in Ireland, the Department of Justice’s Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) issued an official notice on 3 March 2026 confirming that all permissions granted under the EU Temporary Protection Directive have been prolonged by a further 12 months, until 4 March 2027. The extension automatically covers holders of the distinctive yellow Temporary Protection Certificate whose current permission was due to expire on 4 March 2026, meaning no additional application is required. The measure primarily benefits the more than 93,000 Ukrainian nationals who have arrived in Ireland since Russia’s invasion in 2022, but it also applies to smaller cohorts of people who fled conflicts in Syria, Afghanistan and Sudan. According to ISD, beneficiaries may continue to access employment without a work permit, enrol in education, and receive State services such as social welfare, health care and child-benefit payments for another year.

If beneficiaries, their employers, or any foreign national in Ireland need guidance on renewing an Irish Residence Permit or exploring longer-term visa options, VisaHQ’s Dublin-based team can simplify the process. The company’s online portal (https://www.visahq.com/ireland/) offers clear checklists, document reviews, and real-time status tracking, ensuring applications are filed correctly and on time.

While the certificate itself can be shown in its expired form, holders must still renew the accompanying Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card, which serves as their day-to-day proof of lawful stay and right to work. For employers, the announcement removes an administrative cliff-edge that had been looming over work-forces in sectors ranging from hospitality and food production to health care and ICT. HR teams no longer need to process hundreds of status-verification requests this spring, freeing up resources and avoiding potentially costly scheduling gaps. Recruiters also gain an additional year during which they can continue to onboard Ukrainian talent outside the normal employment-permit system. Immigration lawyers note that the 12-month extension brings Ireland into line with the latest EU Council decision, but they are urging businesses to audit their files to ensure every employee still obtains a renewed IRP card before the existing one expires. Failure to do so could create right-to-work compliance risks and invalidate payroll tax credit claims. The Government has not yet indicated whether a further prolongation beyond March 2027 will be considered. However, officials emphasised that today’s decision reflects Ireland’s “solidarity and humanitarian commitment”, while giving employers the certainty they need to plan staffing levels for the coming financial year.
