Home Office recruits three chief technology officers to drive digital borders overhaul
The UK Home Office has launched a high-profile recruitment drive for three chief technology officers (CTOs) tasked with keeping the country’s border, passport and immigration IT running – and, crucially, fit for the next wave of digital transformation. Two of the new CTOs will sit inside Migration & Borders Digital, the £1.8 billion division that runs airport e-Gates, the electronic travel authorisation (ETA) platform, the visa case-work system and the digital identity and “view and prove” immigration-status service used by employers and landlords. The third CTO will head Enterprise Services, which looks after the Home Office’s cloud-first networks and end-user technology for more than 35,000 staff. Successful candidates, who will earn up to £105,000 and must pass national-security vetting, can be based in Cardiff, Croydon, Glasgow, Manchester or Sheffield, with applications closing on 24 May. The vacancies underline how dependent the UK’s future border model is on technology. Ministers want 100 per cent of passengers— including visa-exempt visitors — to have an ETA before they travel, and they plan to replace the paper and biometric residence permit with an all-digital “eVisa” by 2027. Migration & Borders Digital already processes 76 million automated border crossings a year and makes ETA decisions in “about 45 seconds”, according to the division’s director-general Mike McCarthy.

For businesses and individual travellers trying to keep pace with these rapid policy shifts, VisaHQ offers an efficient way to check UK entry requirements, complete ETA or visa applications and monitor progress online. Its dedicated UK page (https://www.visahq.com/united-kingdom/) consolidates the latest guidance and helps organisations avoid last-minute surprises that could derail time-sensitive trips.

Scaling that to hundreds of millions of journeys while maintaining resilience is the incoming CTOs’ core mission. For employers and global-mobility teams the stakes are high. Any outage to eGates or ETA processing can translate into queues, missed connections and reputational damage for international assignees. The Home Office’s decision to split CTO responsibility between passenger-facing systems and back-office corporate IT should, in theory, give each area clearer accountability and faster incident response. The advertised roles also emphasise “service design” and “user-centred” delivery, signalling that government wants tech leaders who can cut red tape for travellers and sponsors, not just keep servers online. Practically, companies that rely on just-in-time travel or who schedule start dates around visa grant notices should build contingency time into itineraries this summer, when the new leaders will still be bedding in. They should also keep an eye on the CTOs’ inevitable vendor reviews: multi-year passport-printing, cloud-hosting and biometric-algorithm contracts worth hundreds of millions will be up for re-bid in the next 12-18 months and could affect service levels. In the longer term, the recruitment confirms the Home Office’s pivot toward a fully digitised border where immigration status, travel history and risk data are fused in real time. Companies with UK-bound travellers will need to ensure their HR, travel-booking and data-privacy policies can interface with that ecosystem — or risk being left in the slow lane of the e-Gate queue.
