Hermes Airports says summer seat capacity cut limited to 5 % despite Iran-related travel slump
Cyprus’ two international gateways, Larnaca and Paphos, will see airline seat supply for the April-to-October high season trimmed by “no more than 5 %” compared with last year, airport operator Hermes Airports told Reuters on 6 May. The reduction—about 600,000 seats—comes after passenger traffic started to falter in March following the escalation of the United-States/Israel conflict with Iran and a drone strike on Britain’s Akrotiri base on 2 March, events that spooked carriers and travellers across the Eastern Mediterranean. Hermes said the capacity cuts are concentrated in lower frequencies rather than outright route cancellations, meaning the island will still be connected to 165 destinations by 54 airlines this summer. Arrivals have already dropped 16 % year on year in April, but the company stressed there is “no impact on schedules due to fuel-scarcity issues”, and load factors have rebounded to 80–85 % since 20 April. Key markets such as the United Kingdom and Poland are filling more than 90 % of seats, a sign that core leisure flows remain resilient.

The modest seat reduction contrasts with deeper cuts seen at competing sun-and-sea destinations closer to the Middle East flashpoint. By protecting the breadth of its network, Cyprus hopes to avoid the sharp connectivity contraction it experienced during the pandemic and to keep the island attractive for business travel, expatriate rotations and export-oriented sectors that rely on frequent air links. Corporate mobility managers should, however, budget for tighter peak-season availability and possible fare volatility on the most popular European routes. Hermes urged companies to book early and consider alternative routings via Athens or Istanbul should direct seats sell out. From a policy perspective, the operator’s disclosure gives the Deputy Ministry of Tourism hard numbers with which to calibrate support measures and marketing spend as it seeks to offset war-related demand weakness without distorting the market.
