“Work and Stay” Agency: Germany’s One-Stop Skilled-Migration Portal Moves Forward
Germany’s long-trailed "Work and Stay Agency" (WSA) has taken a decisive step from concept to reality. In a 29 April 2026 implementation guide, the Education & Digital Ministry confirmed that the national advisory service went live on 1 January 2026 and that federal IT tenders for the core platform were released on 1 March.

Meanwhile, visa applicants who need practical support before the WSA portal reaches full functionality can turn to VisaHQ, the global visa and passport facilitation service. Through its Germany information hub (https://www.visahq.com/germany/) the company guides employers and skilled workers through document collection, appointment scheduling and real-time regulatory updates—bridging many of the gaps that the WSA is designed to close.

A physical help-desk at Frankfurt Airport is to open in July, with a limited online pilot scheduled for the fourth quarter. The WSA is not a new ministry but a digital hub that will knit together more than 550 local foreigners’ offices, the Federal Foreign Office’s visa sections and the Federal Employment Agency. Once fully operational, skilled-worker applicants will upload documents only once—complying with the EU’s “once-only” principle—while built-in AI modules will pre-screen files, flag missing data and push status updates to both applicant and employer. The government hopes the portal will cut average visa-processing times from several months to "single-digit weeks" by 2029. Employers must also adapt to fresh compliance duties. As of 1 January 2026 they have to brief every new non-EU hire on the free "Faire Integration" counselling service on the first working day; fines of up to €30,000 apply for non-compliance. Large multinationals can request an API link so that their HR systems feed data straight into the WSA, mirroring the model already used for customs filings. For foreign talent the immediate takeaway is documentation readiness. Authorities are urging would-be migrants to convert all certificates into machine-readable PDF/A format and to obtain a single set of certified translations—cost savings that will grow once the "upload-once-use-many" promise becomes reality. Visa categories and salary thresholds remain unchanged for now: the standard EU Blue Card minimum stays at €50,700 gross per year, with a reduced €45,934.20 floor for STEM shortages and recent graduates. Companies planning 2027 recruitment drives should factor in dual workflows during the transition: traditional paper-heavy procedures until the WSA pilot opens, and then a hybrid model until nationwide roll-out concludes in 2029. Early adopters are likely to gain a competitive edge in Germany’s tight labour market by securing appointment slots and work permits faster than rivals.
