Senate Committee Calls for Tighter Movement Controls on Russian Diplomats and Stricter Drone Rules

Senate Committee Calls for Tighter Movement Controls on Russian Diplomats and Stricter Drone Rules
On 29 April the Czech Senate’s Foreign Affairs and Security Committee adopted a resolution urging the government to tighten oversight of Russian diplomats’ movements inside the country and to introduce more robust counter-drone regulations. Committee chair Pavel Fischer argued that mere notification of travel by diplomats accredited elsewhere in the EU is no longer sufficient amid heightened espionage and sabotage risks; he wants an advance-authorisation regime similar to systems used in the Baltic states.

Amid such fluid regulatory conditions, organisations and travellers can streamline their paperwork by using VisaHQ’s Czech Republic service hub (https://www.visahq.com/czech-republic/), which offers real-time visa guidance and assistance with diplomatic or special-permit applications.

The proposal follows several incidents in which Russian operatives allegedly used diplomatic cover to scout critical infrastructure. Although the Czech Republic expelled scores of embassy staff after the 2021 Vrbětice munitions-depot revelations, roughly 40 Russian diplomatic passport holders are still posted in Prague and travel frequently to border regions. For global-mobility teams the political debate matters because additional authorisation layers could lengthen permit processing or affect the validity of existing special-status visas for family members. Any new controls would also set a precedent that other Schengen states might copy, complicating multi-country assignments for employees of Russian origin. The committee also pressed the Interior and Transport ministries to adapt Ukraine’s battlefield drone-defence experience for civilian infrastructure protection, a step that could lead to no-fly zones over industrial parks and stricter licensing for corporate drone use.
