Wizz Air unveils Athens and Madrid routes as it scales Larnaca hub
Low-cost carrier Wizz Air has announced a fresh expansion of its Cypriot network, adding daily services from Larnaca to Athens and four-weekly flights to Madrid, alongside frequency increases on its existing Milan and Vienna routes. The new flights will go on sale this week, with operations commencing in September 2026 and promotional one-way fares starting at €29.99 including cabin baggage. The move cements Larnaca’s role as Wizz Air’s largest base in the Eastern Mediterranean—an important counterweight to the capacity cuts the airline made last winter when conflict in the region depressed demand. By autumn the carrier will offer 32 destinations from Cyprus, giving cost-conscious corporates more non-stop options and intensifying competition with legacy operators Aegean and Iberia on the two flagship European city-pairs. For mobility managers, the added frequencies mean greater flexibility for short-notice assignments and project kick-offs in Athens’ financial district or Spain’s tech clusters around Madrid-Barajas. However, travel buyers should note Wizz Air’s strict ancillary-fee structure: checked luggage and seat selection can quickly erode the headline fare, and large musical instruments or sports equipment attract extra charges.

Travellers taking advantage of the expanded network may also wish to double-check entry requirements: VisaHQ’s Cyprus platform (https://www.visahq.com/cyprus/) can rapidly assess whether you need a visa for Greece, Spain or onward connections, file the paperwork online and track approvals in real time, saving travel managers and individual flyers valuable hours.

Cyprus’ Deputy Ministry of Tourism welcomed the announcement, saying the Madrid link in particular will help diversify the island’s visitor mix away from its traditional UK-Russia-Israel axis. It also opens a potential feed for Latin-American traffic via Iberia’s Madrid hub once codeshares are finalised. Wizz Air will base an additional A321neo in Larnaca to support the expansion, bringing its locally based fleet to five aircraft and creating around 40 new ground and cabin-crew jobs—another small boost to Cyprus’ aviation labour market, which has been scrambling to replace talent lost during the pandemic.
