Finnair Posts Strong Q1 2026 Results, Signals More Long-Haul Capacity for Business Travellers
Finnair delivered an unexpectedly robust first-quarter performance, turning a seasonally weak period into a near-break-even quarter thanks to double-digit revenue growth and a sharp rebound in Asian demand. Revenue rose 12.1 percent year-on-year to €778 million, while the comparable operating loss narrowed to just €0.6 million. Passenger numbers reached 2.8 million—up 7.3 percent—and load factors climbed to 78 percent.

For corporate travelers and leisure passengers planning to tap into Finnair’s growing network via Helsinki, VisaHQ can simplify the visa process for Finland and onward destinations. Its online platform (https://www.visahq.com/finland/) provides real-time entry requirements, digital application tools, and concierge support, ensuring mobility managers and individual flyers secure the right travel documents without delays.

Behind the numbers lies a structural shift in traffic flows. With capacity between Europe and Asia still constrained by overflights of Russia and, more recently, missile-related disruptions in the Gulf, Helsinki has regained part of its pre-war role as a northern hub. Finnair says Asian load factors hit 86.8 percent in March, prompting management to accelerate the re-opening of Osaka and Guangzhou and to add frequencies to Delhi and Singapore from July. The airline acknowledged headwinds: jet-fuel prices were 24 percent higher in euros than a year earlier, and Finnair’s own hedging level will fall from 86 percent in Q1 to 69 percent for the rest of the year. Nevertheless, strong liquidity (cash flow €274 million in Q1) allows it to proceed with its narrow-body fleet renewal and to restore premium cabin inventory demanded by corporate travel buyers. For mobility managers the take-away is two-fold. First, more capacity and better aircraft economics should translate into additional seat availability on key Asia-to-Finland and Asia-to-Northern-Europe routings during the August-to-December contracting season. Second, Finnair warns that EES-related border checks can add 15–25 minutes to connection times at Helsinki Airport, so itineraries built around tight 35-minute connections may need adjusting. Finnair will release updated guidance at its July earnings call, but it already expects full-year capacity to grow by “high single digits” and for Asia to account for 40 percent of ASK (Available Seat Kilometres) by year-end—up from 34 percent today. That is welcome news for Finnish exporters and multinational headquarters that struggled with seat shortages on Japan, Korea and India lanes in 2025.
