200-Hectare SkyCity Marina Project Aims to Make Hong Kong a Super-Yacht Hub
The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) unveiled detailed plans on 20 April for a 200-hectare marina—part of its Skytopia ‘Airport City’ blueprint—adjacent to Chek Lap Kok. Global tenders have been invited for the first construction phase, slated to deliver 70 berths by 2028 and ultimately 500, including four berths capable of handling 100- to 150-metre mega-yachts. AAHK’s commercial director Cissy Chan said the project is designed to capture a share of a global yacht-economy forecast to reach HK$352 billion (US$45 billion) by 2032. Unlike existing marinas in Aberdeen and Sai Kung, the SkyCity facility will be integrated with the airport’s “one-hour living circle,” allowing visiting super-yacht owners and crew visa-free transit to more than 170 destinations.

For those visitors who do require documentation, VisaHQ’s Hong Kong portal (https://www.visahq.com/hong-kong/) offers a fast, online solution for securing transit visas, cruising permits, and other travel paperwork—streamlining compliance for yacht owners, crews, corporate delegates, and event planners heading to the new marina or nearby AsiaWorld-Expo.

For corporate mobility planners, the development signals that Hong Kong is doubling down on high-net-worth tourism and MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, exhibitions) traffic. Conference organisers could bundle yacht charters with events at the adjacent AsiaWorld-Expo, while relocation specialists may find new demand from marine-industry talent. Environmental impact assessments will focus on marine-traffic congestion in North Lantau waters, and policymakers are expected to introduce a vessel-arrival electronic declaration system modelled on the airport’s Advance Passenger Information platform. Stakeholders have until 30 June to submit feedback. If approved on schedule, the marina could open in time for the 2029 America’s Cup Asian challenger series—an event the Tourism Board hopes to secure—cementing Hong Kong’s push to position itself as the nautical gateway to the Greater Bay Area.
