Today, cross-border commuters must change trains at St. Margrethen, a bottleneck for businesses operating on both sides of the Rhine valley. Secondly, the canton wants the elimination of the single-track gap between Rorschach and Rorschach-Stadt, which currently limits capacity for both freight and passenger services along Lake Constance. The third request is a double-track section at Tiefenwinkel–Mühlehorn on the Walensee corridor, a move that would stabilise long-distance timetables linking Zurich, Sargans and destinations in neighbouring Liechtenstein and Austria.
