St. Gallen presses Bern to include three cross-border rail projects in 2045 master plan
With competition among Switzerland’s regions heating up ahead of the Federal Council’s June decision on the 2045 rail-infrastructure package, St. Gallen officials have gone public with the canton’s wish-list. In an interview published on Sunday by SWI swissinfo.ch, Patrick Ruggli, head of the cantonal public-transport office, named three priorities designed to boost international and inter-regional mobility. Top of the list is upgrading St. Gallen and Rorschach stations to support a through-running half-hourly international S-Bahn to Austria. Today, cross-border commuters must change trains at St. Margrethen, a bottleneck for businesses operating on both sides of the Rhine valley. Secondly, the canton wants the elimination of the single-track gap between Rorschach and Rorschach-Stadt, which currently limits capacity for both freight and passenger services along Lake Constance. The third request is a double-track section at Tiefenwinkel–Mühlehorn on the Walensee corridor, a move that would stabilise long-distance timetables linking Zurich, Sargans and destinations in neighbouring Liechtenstein and Austria.

Stakeholders argue that, when combined with national flagship projects such as the Brüttenertunnel (Winterthur–Zurich) already under way, the measures would finally bring the Zurich–St. Gallen journey below 60 minutes and create a coherent eastern Swiss hub for international freight and business travel. For corporate mobility planners the message is two-fold: medium-term rail connectivity in eastern Switzerland looks set to improve, but funding competition is fierce. Companies with large commuter flows or export logistics in the region may wish to lobby federal authorities during the consultation window to ensure their corridors are not sidelined.
