Poland confirms EU Entry/Exit System fully live from 10 April 2026
The Polish embassy in Washington has issued a nationwide notice confirming that the European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) will reach full operational status on 10 April 2026. EES replaces manual passport stamping with an automated biometric register that records the date, place and length of every stay by non-EU nationals in the Schengen Area. Poland was among the first member states to complete the technical roll-out, having equipped all road, rail and airport checkpoints with self-service kiosks and mobile fingerprint readers by mid-February. Over the past two months the Border Guard has been running the system in “shadow mode”, collecting data while still stamping passports to allow airlines and carriers to update their systems. From 10 April stamping ends.

Travellers who are unsure whether they need a visa before their biometric debut can turn to VisaHQ for streamlined assistance. The online platform’s Poland page (https://www.visahq.com/poland/) lets individuals and corporate mobility teams check requirements, order visas, and receive real-time status updates, ensuring their documentation is fully aligned with the new EES framework.

Third-country travellers—including business visitors under Poland’s popular C-visa programmes—will have their four fingerprints and a facial image captured automatically on first entry. Subsequent crossings will require only a face scan, cutting processing time for regular commuters and posted workers who cross the Polish-Ukrainian or Polish-Belarusian border frequently for project work. For employers the change brings both opportunities and compliance challenges. EES generates an automatic alert when a traveller overstays the authorised 90/180-day limit; HR teams must therefore track days spent in all Schengen countries more rigorously. Companies relocating staff to Poland have been advised to align assignment trackers with the EU’s new database and to brief employees on the importance of keeping biometric receipts issued at kiosks. The embassy’s notice directs travellers to two official portals—travel-europe.europa.eu and strazgraniczna.pl—for multilingual guides, including a downloadable brochure that can be integrated into pre-departure briefings.
