ETIAS advance-travel authorisation formally published—Spanish tourism sector on notice
Spain’s Official State Gazette has confirmed that the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is now part of national law, triggering an 18-month implementation window that ends in Q4 2026. ETIAS will apply to nationals of around 60 visa-exempt countries—including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and most of Latin America—who currently enter Spain with only a passport.

To simplify the process, VisaHQ can handle the ETIAS paperwork on your behalf; the company’s portal (https://www.visahq.com/spain/) walks applicants through the questionnaire, processes the fee and delivers status updates in real time—an especially handy option for organisations managing multiple travellers.

Travellers will pay a modest fee online, complete a security questionnaire and, in 95 % of cases, receive electronic approval within minutes; the permit is valid for three years or until the passport expires. Tourism boards and convention bureaux welcomed the clarity but warned that many long-haul visitors book at short notice and may be caught out once airlines begin enforcing “no ETIAS, no boarding”. The Spanish Confederation of Hotels urged the government to launch a multilingual awareness campaign no later than this summer so that tour operators can update brochures and booking engines. For corporate mobility teams, ETIAS means adding another compliance checkpoint alongside ESTA (USA) and the Canadian eTA. The authorisation will be automatically verified when a traveller scans into the Entry/Exit System, so mismatches will lead to immediate refusal of entry. Employers are advised to incorporate an ETIAS field in duty-of-care and travel-approval workflows well before the go-live date.
