UAE grants automatic overstay-fine waiver for travellers delayed by regional airspace closures
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) has moved quickly to shield visitors and departing residents from unexpected costs created by the five-week-old conflict in the Gulf. In a directive published on 4 March and confirmed again on 7 April, the authority declared that any overstay or late-departure fines incurred on or after 28 February will be automatically cancelled if the traveller’s flight was disrupted by government-ordered air-space closures or mass schedule changes. Airport immigration desks and ICP Customer Happiness Centres have been instructed to process exits without collecting penalties, provided the delay can be linked to the shutdown period. The step addresses a cascading compliance risk. A single missed flight can instantly turn a lawful stay into an overstay that accrues AED 50 per day and blocks future visa applications. By wiping those fines, the ICP removes a financial shock for thousands of business visitors, tourists and expatriates who were stranded when Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE temporarily closed portions of their skies after 28 February. Airlines and ground-handling agents also benefit because fewer passengers now need last-minute cash payments or special approvals at the airport. Corporate mobility managers say the waiver simplifies crisis exit plans.

For anyone who now needs to confirm their status or secure a fresh UAE visa once flights stabilize, VisaHQ can step in with end-to-end support. Its dedicated portal for the Emirates (https://www.visahq.com/united-arab-emirates/) provides real-time updates on ICP policies, walks applicants through the paperwork, and can even flag recent overstay waivers so that new applications aren’t delayed by old fines.

HR teams handling residence-permit cancellations can allow staff to remain on cancelled visas until a safe departure is possible, without triggering individual liabilities. Travel-management companies report that re-bookings processed after 1 April are already showing “zero overstay due” on ICP’s database when the ticket history proves the flight was cancelled because of the conflict. Practically, travellers must still present evidence—such as the original ticket number or airline SMS—linking their delay to the airspace disruption. ICP staff can then tag the case to the exemption code before stamping the passport. The authority has not set an end-date, but officials told local media the policy will be reviewed once the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) issues its 10 April conflict-zone bulletin on UAE skies.
