Brazil’s Immigration Portal MigranteWeb switches GRU payments to PagTesouro on 6 April
From today, anyone who needs to pay Brazilian immigration fees—whether to apply for a temporary-work visa, renew a residence permit or obtain a digital-nomad authorisation—must generate and pay the government fee (Guia de Recolhimento da União, GRU) through the federal PagTesouro platform. The change was announced on the Ministry of Justice’s Immigration Portal over the weekend and went live in the early hours of 6 April. The new module allows applicants to copy a PIX QR-code, pay instantly by domestic credit card or download a boleto GRU that can be settled at any bank branch or online banking app.

VisaHQ can help companies and travelers adapt to the new requirements. Through our dedicated Brazil portal (https://www.visahq.com/brazil/), users can generate the correct GRU, arrange local payment even when they don’t have a Brazilian bank account, and receive professional review of all supporting documents—so applications reach MigranteWeb without delay.

The move aligns immigration collections with the Treasury’s wider push to centralise federal payments and reduce reconciliation times. For mobility managers the biggest practical benefit is speed: PagTesouro confirms settlement within minutes, allowing the MigranteWeb system to release digital proof-of-payment immediately. Under the old model, confirmation could take up to three business days, delaying filings with the Ministry of Justice and the Federal Police. HR teams should update internal check-lists and inform foreign assignees that legacy GRU forms issued before 6 April will no longer be accepted at police posts or in electronic petitions. Service providers also warn that the PIX option is only available to payers with a Brazilian banking relationship; overseas assignees who do not yet have a local account will still need help from a payroll partner or in-country representative.
