Ground-staff strike hits Spanish airports, Easter travellers told to arrive three hours early
Spanish ground-handling workers have begun a fresh wave of 24-hour walk-outs that will run from 2 to 6 April, threatening one of the busiest holiday periods of the year. A strike notice published by the UGT and CCOO unions covers Barcelona-El Prat, Madrid-Barajas, Málaga, Palma de Mallorca, Valencia and Gran Canaria as well as dozens of smaller airports where Menzies Aviation and Groundforce hold handling licences. Luxair was the first foreign carrier to issue an alert on 2 April, warning passengers to expect delays and urging them to check flight status regularly. Iberia and Vueling followed with “flexible re-booking” policies, allowing corporate clients to move travel to non-strike days without penalty. Airport operator Aena says it will invoke Spain’s minimum-service decree, but acknowledges that baggage delivery, aircraft push-back and special-assistance services are likely to suffer.

Amid such operational uncertainty, staying on top of visa validity and invitation letters is crucial. VisaHQ’s dedicated Spain portal (https://www.visahq.com/spain/) lets mobility teams submit applications online, monitor status updates instantly and arrange courier delivery, ensuring travellers aren’t blindsided by paperwork setbacks on top of strike-related delays.

For global-mobility teams the disruption could derail tight rotation schedules. Mobility staff bringing assignees into Spain for short-term projects should pad itineraries by at least half a day, pre-book fast-track security where available and warn travellers that priority-tagged baggage is not exempt from delays. HR leaders may also need to extend hotel stays or negotiate day-use office space if hand-luggage-only policies are not feasible. The strikes highlight a broader challenge in Spain’s liberalised ground-handling market: rising inflation and wage stagnation have triggered repeated industrial action since late 2024. Multinationals with large assignee populations in Barcelona and Madrid have begun inserting ‘force-majeure – industrial dispute’ clauses in travel insurance to recover taxi, hotel and re-ticketing costs. Negotiations between unions, the Ministry of Transport and service providers are scheduled for 8 April, but insiders say a framework deal on wage indexing and staffing ratios may not arrive before the peak summer season. Mobility managers should therefore scenario-plan for further walk-outs in May and June.
