SWISS Re-deploys Aircraft to Add 74 Extra European Flights After Middle-East Cancellations
Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has announced that it will operate 74 additional short-haul rotations between May and September 2026, redeploying aircraft that have been grounded by its ongoing suspension of services to the Middle East. The carrier confirmed the move on 1 April and detailed the schedule publicly on 2 April. Routes benefiting from the capacity boost include high-demand leisure and business destinations such as Málaga, Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, Porto, Athens, Thessaloniki, Stockholm, Malta, Venice, Palermo and Nice. In addition, SWISS will add a second daily Zürich–Delhi service through 31 May to offset disrupted Asia-bound connectivity normally provided via Gulf hubs. The airline has cancelled more than 300 long-haul flights to Dubai, Tel Aviv, Abu Dhabi and several other Gulf and Levant cities through at least 24 October because of air-space restrictions linked to the war in the Middle East. Freed-up A320-family and A330 aircraft, along with crews, are being reassigned to intra-European sectors where seasonal demand is surging. SWISS says the strategy should preserve overall capacity levels, protect revenue and maintain pilot flying hours while geopolitical uncertainty persists. For corporate travel managers, the extra seats will ease summer bottlenecks on some of Europe’s busiest holiday and conference routes out of Zürich and Geneva. However, clients with itineraries to the Middle East must continue to route via Star Alliance partners in Frankfurt or Istanbul, adding cost and travel time.

For travel managers needing to navigate the resulting mix of Schengen and non-Schengen transit rules, VisaHQ’s Switzerland portal (https://www.visahq.com/switzerland/) offers up-to-date guidance and streamlined application tools for Swiss, EU and destination-country visas. The service can quickly identify requirements for rerouted itineraries—such as overnight connections in Frankfurt or Istanbul—and even arrange courier pickup and express processing, helping companies keep travelers compliant and on schedule.

Mobility teams should update booking tools to reflect the new flight numbers (e.g., LX2646/2647 on the ZRH-DEL route) and revise advance-purchase policies accordingly. The announcement underscores the agility airlines now need to manage fleet deployment amid shifting geopolitical risks. It also highlights Switzerland’s role as a key European hub that can quickly pivot capacity within the Schengen area when long-haul markets become volatile.
