Spain Accelerates Entry/Exit System Roll-out Ahead of April Deadline
With just over two weeks until the European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) becomes mandatory on 10 April 2026, Spain has begun 24-hour stress-testing of biometric kiosks at its busiest external Schengen border points—Madrid-Barajas (T4S), Barcelona-El Prat (T1) and Málaga - Costa del Sol. According to the latest update on the EES information page (23 March 2026), all member states, including Spain, must achieve full registration capability before the deadline. Under the programme, third-country nationals—including British, US and Latin-American tourists—will be fingerprinted and have their facial image captured the first time they cross an external Schengen frontier. Spain’s border police (Policía Nacional) have hired 450 temporary agents and redeployed 200 Guardia Civil officers from low-volume land crossings to meet the throughput target of 160 passengers per kiosk per hour.

For business travellers, the most visible change will be in departure procedures. Airlines operating long-haul flights out of Spain will require passengers to complete pre-departure biometric enrolment at self-service kiosks before visiting the check-in counter. Corporate travel managers are advising employees to arrive at least 45 minutes earlier at Barajas and El Prat until passenger flows normalise. Spanish airports are also expanding Fast Track lanes for holders of Aena’s VIP cards and for passengers travelling on fully-flexible business fares to mitigate queue times. Technology suppliers Indra and everis have confirmed that the Spanish nodes of eu-LISA’s central database passed the latest resilience test, clearing the way for the “live” environment. Businesses moving staff in and out of Spain in April should update traveller briefs, capture biometric consent in employee mobility policies and remind non-EU employees that EES overstay penalties will be applied automatically once the system is live—there will be no passport stamps to contest.
