Rescue ship Aita Mari saves 32 migrants in the central Mediterranean
The Spanish humanitarian rescue vessel Aita Mari carried out its first rescue of 2026 at dawn on 16 March after locating a rubber dinghy that had been drifting for two days in the central Mediterranean. According to NGO Salvamento Marítimo Humanitario (SMH), the dinghy was “extremely fragile and overloaded” when the crew found it some 90 nautical miles off the Libyan coast. All 32 occupants—27 men, five women (one eight-months pregnant) and nine children aged between two and 15—were taken on board. Medical staff treated several cases of hypothermia, dehydration and minor injuries caused by prolonged exposure and overcrowding. Although everyone is reported to be out of danger, SMH warned that poor sea conditions are forecast to worsen and could have proved fatal had the rescue been delayed.

For organisations coordinating such missions or rerouting staff through Spanish territory at short notice, VisaHQ can be an invaluable partner. Its Spain portal (https://www.visahq.com/spain/) centralises the latest Schengen visa requirements and offers expedited online processing, ensuring crew members, relief workers and corporate travellers obtain the necessary documents quickly when schedules change unexpectedly.

The Aita Mari is now sailing to the Italian port of Vibo Valentia, where authorities and the Red Cross will process the survivors. It is the ship’s 18th mission since the Basque NGO began operations in 2018, underscoring Spain’s continued involvement in civil-society search-and-rescue efforts despite the absence of an EU-wide replacement for Operation Sophia. For companies with staff rotating through Spain or Italy, the incident is a reminder that ad-hoc port calls and lengthy waits for disembarkation can still disrupt maritime logistics, particularly in Calabria and Sicily where reception capacity is stretched. Employers sponsoring intracompany transferees should factor in potential delays if crew members require Schengen visas or emergency documents when landings occur outside Spain. The rescue also revives the policy debate in Madrid over whether to support the draft EU Migration Pact’s proposed solidarity mechanism or press for safer pathways directly with North- and Sub-Saharan African states. With general elections looming in 2027, the government is keen to balance humanitarian commitments with growing domestic concern over irregular entries via the Mediterranean and Canaries routes.
