Graduate-Visa Fee Hike Sparks Last-Minute Rush Ahead of Easter Intake Deadlines
International education agents report a surge in lodgements for the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa in the 24 hours to midnight 15 March, as would-be graduates scrambled to file before universities close for the Easter break. The rush follows the government’s 1 March decision to double the base application charge from AUD 2,300 to AUD 4,600 – a move Canberra says aligns costs with processing effort but which students argue threatens Australia’s competitiveness. According to data shared by the International Education Association of Australia (IEAA), ImmiAccount recorded 4,820 complete 485 submissions on 15 March alone, almost triple the daily average in February. Agents say many applicants are borrowing from family or placing the fee on credit cards to beat university cut-off dates for confirmation of enrolment (CoE) extensions.

Universities Australia has formally asked the Department of Home Affairs for a transitional concession allowing students who finished courses before 30 June to pay the old fee. In a letter seen by the AFR, the group argues that the retrospective financial hit is “inconsistent with the Migration Strategy’s commitment to fairness and transparency”. The Department says no waiver is planned but notes that graduates can offset the cost by working the higher post-study hours now permitted. For corporate mobility planners, the price shock may affect graduate-hire pipelines for 2027. “We rely on 485 holders to bridge newly-hired engineers into permanent roles,” said Katrina Wong, Global Mobility Lead at Atlassian. She estimates the fee hike adds AUD 15,000-plus to the budget when dependants are included. Companies are revisiting relocation packages and, in some cases, fronting the visa charge as a sign-on bonus. IEAA warns that Canada’s recent cap on post-graduate work permits and the UK’s tightening of dependants’ rights are pushing more students toward destinations with clearer pathways. “If Australia prices itself too high without improving certainty, the market could shift,” said IEAA chief executive Phil Honeywood.
