EU Publishes Implementing Regulation Creating Three-Month No-Fly Zones over Eastern Poland
The Official Journal of the European Union on Wednesday printed Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/568, which formally designates a chain of temporary restricted areas (TRAs) in Polish airspace adjacent to Belarus, Ukraine and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. The notice gives legal effect at EU level to the Polish NOTAM issued at 00:01 CET on 10 March and clarifies the rules for all civil operators registered in EU member states. Under the regulation, most Visual Flight Rules (VFR) traffic below 6,000 ft and all civilian drone operations are prohibited in four voivodeships—Podlaskie, Lubelskie, Podkarpackie and Warmińsko-Mazurskie—until 9 June 2026. Scheduled airlines flying on Instrument Flight Rules airways above FL 095 are unaffected, but any diversion below that altitude must obtain real-time clearance from Polish Air Navigation Services (PANSA). Emergency medical flights, SAR missions and state aircraft retain access subject to prior coordination. The European Commission says the measure is necessary to “mitigate an acute threat to civil aviation posed by drone and missile activity linked to the war in Ukraine.”

Whether you are a drone operator, corporate pilot, or simply a traveler rerouting through Warsaw, VisaHQ can quickly secure the necessary Polish visas and transit documents. Its dedicated Poland page (https://www.visahq.com/poland/) lists the latest entry requirements and offers expedited processing, helping aviation professionals stay compliant while the new TRAs are in force.

Since January, Poland has documented seven incursions by unidentified UAVs, including one that crashed 12 km inside its territory. Brussels acted within 48 hours of Warsaw triggering Article 21 of the Single European Sky framework, which allows a member state to request union-wide enforcement of national security measures. Corporate air operators must quickly reassess planned survey, filming and pipeline-inspection flights in the affected voivodeships. Aviation insurers have already told policy-holders that coverage may be void if they enter a TRA without an explicit waiver. Logistics firms relying on drones for “last-mile” parcel delivery near Białystok and Lublin will have to revert to ground transport or apply for special permits that carry a 14-day processing time. PANSA has opened an English-language hotline (+48 22 574 5747) for flight-plan amendments, while the Civil Aviation Authority warns that breaching the new zones can attract fines up to PLN 120,000 and the confiscation of unmanned aircraft. Mobility teams should brief travellers to expect sporadic GPS interference tests and possible short-notice rerouting of regional turboprop services as military exercises intensify along NATO’s eastern flank.
