China and Japan agree to double Haneda–China flights from March 2027
Chinese and Japanese aviation regulators have signed a pact that will double the number of scheduled flights between Tokyo’s Haneda Airport and mainland China starting at the end of March 2027. The agreement adds four daily frequencies on the busy Haneda–Shanghai route, launches four daily Haneda–Guangzhou services and opens the door to future increases on Haneda–Beijing once slots become available.

Capacity between the two countries is still only 70 percent of pre-pandemic levels and demand is surging: Chinese visitor arrivals to Japan jumped 220 percent year-on-year in January–February 2026 after Beijing added Japan to its 30-day visa-free list. The new framework will raise total Haneda–China flights to 16 per day and allocates frequencies evenly between Chinese and Japanese carriers, giving corporate travel buyers greater timetable and alliance choice.

International travelers taking advantage of the expanded schedule may still need visas for certain trip purposes. VisaHQ’s self-service portal (https://www.visahq.com/china/) simplifies Chinese visa filings for Japan-based passengers and can also facilitate Japanese documentation for China-origin travelers, allowing mobility managers to keep their teams compliant as traffic rebounds.

A key provision designates all airports other than the Tokyo, Beijing and Shanghai metro hubs as “open-sky”, allowing airlines to launch routes and decide frequencies without government approval. Regional airports in both countries—such as Fukuoka, Hangzhou and Qingdao—are expected to benefit as inbound tour operators seek secondary city pairings that bypass congested hubs.

For multinationals the expanded bilateral schedule reduces layovers for itineraries that connect Japanese manufacturing plants with Chinese supply-chain partners. Air-cargo divisions will also gain belly-hold capacity precisely when semiconductor and battery components require rapid uplift. Travel managers should begin tracking filed schedules for IATA S27 to lock in lower advance-purchase fares before allotments tighten.

Because the expansion takes effect after the 2026 Asian Games travel peak, airlines have a year to commission additional narrow-body aircraft and arrange slot swaps. Human-resources teams relocating assignees between the two markets can therefore plan 2027 moves with greater confidence in seat availability and fare stability.
