LOT mounts special repatriation flights from Sri Lanka and Maldives to Warsaw
Poland’s flag-carrier LOT Polish Airlines has stepped in to rescue hundreds of holiday-makers left stranded after a fresh wave of Middle-East-related air-space disruptions rippled across South Asia at the weekend. In a late-night statement on 7 March, the airline confirmed that it will operate two one-off “extra-section” services on 10 March—Colombo–Warsaw and Malé–Warsaw—co-ordinated together with major Polish tour operators.

Although both destinations are normally served only on a seasonal basis, LOT secured ad-hoc slots after a string of cancellations by Gulf carriers forced Polish travellers to scramble for alternatives. Seats will be allocated first to passengers whose original itineraries were booked through agencies such as Itaka, Rainbow and TUI; any remaining capacity may be released to individual travellers through LOT Travel. The government has waived the usual charter permit lead times so that the flights can depart within 72 hours, illustrating how Warsaw is prioritising the repatriation of citizens caught up in the wider regional crisis.

The aircraft—expected to be Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners—will position empty from Warsaw to both islands and return non-stop, shaving almost 12 hours off the multi-stop routings some Poles have been attempting via Qatar or Oman. Travellers have been advised that normal checked-baggage allowances will apply, but that ticket changes are not permitted owing to the emergency nature of the operation.

Travel disruptions like these often leave passengers scrambling to confirm entry or transit visa requirements for hastily arranged routings. VisaHQ’s Poland portal (https://www.visahq.com/poland/) lets Polish citizens and residents check, in real time, which visas or electronic travel authorisations they might need, submit applications online and receive expert support within hours—a valuable safety net when new flights are announced at short notice.

For mobility managers the episode is a reminder that seemingly far-away geopolitical shocks can have immediate consequences for Polish assignees and tourists. Companies with employees in Sri Lanka, the Maldives or neighbouring countries should ensure that travellers register with the MFA’s Odysseus system so they can be located quickly when rescue flights become available. HR teams should also build in extra buffer time for connecting trips once evacuees reach Warsaw, as inbound slots at Chopin Airport are becoming congested.

If regional tensions persist beyond next week, industry analysts expect LOT to mount further relief flights or to re-route scheduled Asian services via Central Asia to avoid Iranian and Iraqi airspace. Employers are therefore urged to monitor carrier bulletins and review insurance policies that exclude war-risk areas.
