SWISS profits dive 26% amid cost pressures; carrier pledges network refresh to protect Basel-to-Boston corporate traffic
Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) painted a mixed picture at its annual results briefing in Kloten on 6 March. Operating profit for 2025 fell 26.6% to CHF 502.2 million on revenue of CHF 5.5 billion, as higher maintenance costs, volatile demand and steep airport-fee hikes eroded margins. Cargo yield softness—linked to Red Sea shipping reroutes—also bit into earnings.

Chief executive Jens Fehlinger insisted the downturn is cyclical, not structural. SWISS will accelerate cabin-retrofit programmes to install lighter seats and expand premium-economy capacity, a segment the carrier says now generates 14% of long-haul revenue. Four additional Airbus A350-900s, due for delivery from 2027, are expected to cut fuel burn by 25% compared with the ageing A340 fleet they replace.

Travelers caught up in those fleet and schedule changes may also need to confirm that their travel documents are in order. VisaHQ’s easy-to-use portal (https://www.visahq.com/switzerland/) lets passengers verify Swiss visa requirements in minutes and submit applications online for Switzerland and dozens of other destinations—handy insurance against last-minute itinerary shifts.

On the network side, management confirmed the airline is reviewing its North American timetable, with the popular Basel–Boston triangle service (operated via Zurich) under scrutiny after corporate volumes fell 11% year-on-year. Fehlinger hinted that a re-timed late-evening departure could help pharma executives maximise same-day meetings in Massachusetts while improving aircraft utilisation. Seasonal frequencies to Shanghai and São Paulo will increase, reflecting demand from watchmakers and commodity traders respectively.

For global-mobility teams, the message is twofold: expect continued yield pressure—and thus potential fare bargains—in economy and premium-economy cabins, but brace for tighter inventory in traditional corporate-class buckets as the carrier manages capacity. Travel buyers negotiating 2026 contracts should leverage SWISS’s need to shore up load factors while monitoring whether schedule tweaks erode the “day-trip” value proposition on certain routes.

Despite the financial slip, SWISS improved on-time performance by 4.1 percentage points to 69.3%, narrowly missing its 70% target. Fehlinger said the airline would double down on operational robustness, working with Zurich and Geneva airports to mitigate cascading delays like those seen on 5 March. A dedicated task-force will also map how the EU’s upcoming Entry-Exit System could lengthen boarding-time predictions for non-EU passengers once full biometrics go live on 10 April.
