New Swiss legitimation card launched for diplomats and UN staff, valid as Schengen residence permit
International officials posted to Switzerland will receive an upgraded identity document from 2 March 2026. Geneva-based Host-State Relations, part of the Swiss Mission to the United Nations, announced that a redesigned legitimation card—produced by the Federal Office for Buildings and Logistics—will be issued to new arrivals and on renewal of existing cards.

For international staff and the HR teams that support them, VisaHQ can help make sense of the evolving residence-permit landscape. Its Switzerland portal (https://www.visahq.com/switzerland/) offers step-by-step guidance on visa options, Schengen entry rules and required documentation, providing a convenient one-stop resource as organisations adapt to the new legitimation card format.

The new format explicitly states “Residence Permit” and now prints the holder’s passport number, aligning the card with EU Residence Permit specifications. Crucially, the card confirms that, when presented with a valid travel document, it grants the holder the right to reside in Switzerland and to enter all Schengen-area states. Current cards remain valid until expiry but cannot be swapped proactively, avoiding an administrative rush. For HR teams managing employees seconded to international organisations such as CERN, WHO or WTO, the change provides clearer proof of lawful residence, reducing questions at banks, insurers and cantonal authorities. It also simplifies cross-border travel for accompanying family members, who often commute between Geneva and neighbouring France. The cards incorporate next-generation polycarbonate, laser-engraved security features and a machine-readable zone that will later enable optional NFC verification—a step welcomed by border-guard unions anticipating the Schengen Entry/Exit System roll-out in late 2026. Organisations should update onboarding checklists and instruct staff to carry both the card and passport when crossing borders.
