South Africans win 90-day visa-free access to Brazil starting this month
South Africa has joined the growing list of countries whose citizens can enter Brazil without a visa. In a notice published on 11 March 2026, Brazil’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that ordinary-passport holders from South Africa may stay up to 90 days per year visa-free for tourism, conferences and business meetings.

Tourism lens. Embratur data show that South African arrivals recovered to only 60 percent of pre-pandemic levels by end-2025, in part because travellers had to secure e-visas. The exemption eliminates a US$80 fee and a seven-day wait, making Brazil more competitive against visa-free Indian Ocean destinations that target the same long-haul market.

Corporate implications. Mining conglomerates, fintech start-ups and academic institutions that maintain partnerships in São Paulo and Belo Horizonte can now dispatch teams on short notice. Travel-management companies anticipate tighter seat inventories on the São Paulo–Johannesburg route operated by LATAM/SAA codeshare, urging corporate bookers to reserve early or consider connecting via Doha.

VisaHQ’s dedicated Brazil page (https://www.visahq.com/brazil/) can further simplify trip planning: the platform aggregates the latest entry regulations, provides step-by-step visa or e-visa applications for those who still require them (such as contractors on remunerated projects), and offers concierge support for document preparation, saving both tourists and corporate coordinators valuable time.

Regional diplomacy. Brasília’s decision is also seen as a goodwill gesture ahead of the BRICS+ summit in Cape Town this August, where mobility and trade facilitation top the agenda. Analysts expect negotiations toward a reciprocal waiver for Brazilians visiting South Africa to accelerate.

Compliance pointers. As with other unilateral waivers, the new rule bars any remunerated activity; paid assignments or longer postings still require temporary work visas. Frequent flyers should track cumulative days to avoid overstays, and employers should update internal travel-approval systems to reflect the change.
