Work-visa holders allowed to file renewal applications three months earlier
In an immigration alert issued on 26 February 2026, global law firm Fragomen confirmed that Hong Kong will let foreign professionals renew their employment visas up to 90 days before expiry, starting 1 March 2026. The policy covers the General Employment Policy, Admission Scheme for Mainland Talents and Professionals, Science & Technology Talent Admission, the non-local graduates pathway, the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme and the Second-Generation scheme, together with accompanying dependants. Until now, most holders could only apply four weeks before their stay lapsed, creating an annual paperwork squeeze for companies with large expatriate populations.

To take advantage of the wider submission window without adding administrative overhead, HR teams can tap VisaHQ’s Hong Kong platform, which aggregates forms, tracks deadlines and organises courier pickups in one dashboard. HR managers complained that the narrow window often overlapped with busy year-end travel or audit periods, forcing last-minute courier runs and expensive immigration-consultant fees. By moving the filing window forward, the Immigration Department hopes to give talent greater certainty and reduce the risk of unintentional overstays. Employees whose passports are tied up in visa processing will now have more flexibility to take regional business trips, while firms gain breathing space to collect updated contracts and tax documents. The earlier-filing initiative builds on November 2024 changes that granted the same advantage to Top Talent Pass holders. Together, the reforms align Hong Kong more closely with Singapore and the UAE, both of which already allow renewal submissions three to six months in advance. Fragomen advises employers to update internal calendars immediately and begin compiling extension packages for visas expiring between June and August 2026. Stakeholders in the innovation-and-technology sector, which relies heavily on the fast-track TechTAS scheme, say the added lead time will help start-ups plan fund-raising roadshows without immigration uncertainty hanging over key founders.
