UK ETA enforcement begins: Airlines now refuse boarding to UAE travellers without digital authorisation
Airlines serving the busy UAE–UK corridor have begun strictly enforcing Britain’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) regime after it formally entered into force on 26 February 2026. Under the rules, every passenger who could previously enter the UK visa-free— including Emiratis, other GCC nationals and UAE-based expatriates from Europe, Australia and much of Asia— must hold an approved ETA that is digitally linked to the passport they intend to travel with.

For travellers who want extra peace of mind when applying, VisaHQ’s UAE platform (https://www.visahq.com/united-arab-emirates/) offers hands-on assistance, document pre-checks and real-time tracking that can help individuals and corporate travel departments obtain the new UK ETA smoothly and avoid last-minute airport surprises.

The authorisation, which costs £16 and is valid for two years or until passport expiry, must be obtained online or via the UK ETA mobile app before check-in. ITV News reports that carriers such as Emirates, Etihad, British Airways, easyJet, KLM and Lufthansa have issued staff instructions to deny boarding at Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah if a passenger’s Interactive Advance Passenger Information (iAPI) response shows “Do Not Board”. Airline call-centres are being inundated with last-minute requests from travellers who were unaware that the grace period ended this week. Travel-management companies warn corporates that urgent London meetings will now require an extra compliance step. They advise uploading ETA reference numbers to GDS traveller profiles and reminding employees that most decisions are instant but secondary security reviews can take up to 72 hours. Families must submit separate applications for children; group submissions are possible but approval is still individual. The UK Home Office says the scheme, modelled on the US ESTA, is a cornerstone of its fully digital border strategy. More than 19 million visitors have already been issued ETAs during the phased rollout that started in 2023. With 240,000 British expatriates living in the Emirates and over 140 weekly flights between the two countries, UAE residents are among the first major cohorts to feel the impact of the shift from paper to pixels. Failure to comply will result in denied boarding and potential downstream re-booking costs, so travel managers are urging staff and leisure travellers alike to make the ETA “as routine as checking passport validity”.
