Brazil Opens Visa-Free Entry to Citizens of Eight Countries, Effective 24 February 2026
Brazil has taken a major step toward revitalising inbound travel by granting unilateral short-stay visa-free access to ordinary-passport holders from China, Denmark, France, Hungary, Ireland, Jamaica, Saint Lucia and the Bahamas. According to a communiqué issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the waiver entered into force on 24 February 2026 and permits an initial 30-day stay that can be extended locally for a cumulative 90 days within any 12-month period. The new regime marks the most significant liberalisation of Brazilian entry policy since visa requirements were suspended for U.S., Canadian and Australian tourists ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games. Unlike that earlier experiment—rescinded in 2025 on the grounds of reciprocity—the 2026 waiver is designed first and foremost as an economic stimulus. Tourism board Embratur projects up to US $350 million in additional visitor spending this year, with MICE travel expected to account for almost one-third of the total.

Convenience tip: platforms such as VisaHQ can streamline the process if any member of your party still requires a visa—whether for remunerated work, longer assignments or because their nationality is not yet covered by the exemption. Their Brazil portal (https://www.visahq.com/brazil/) features up-to-date entry guidance, customised document checklists and end-to-end application support that can cut lead times and reduce paperwork headaches.

Aviation and hospitality operators are already responding. LATAM and Air China have announced extra frequencies on São Paulo–Beijing and Rio–Paris routes starting in June, while major hotel chains are rolling out Chinese-language services and Caribbean package deals. Travel managers should note that the exemption is limited to business meetings, conferences and tourism; remunerated work still triggers Brazil’s standard temporary-residence visa process, which requires advance authorisation from the Ministry of Justice and the Federal Police. From a compliance perspective, employers sending mixed-nationality teams must confirm individual eligibility, ensure passports are valid for at least six months and remind travellers that Federal Police officers may request proof of onward travel and sufficient funds. Overstays remain subject to daily fines and potential re-entry bans. Nonetheless, mobility specialists see the measure as a powerful signal that Brasília is willing to use visa policy proactively to capture post-pandemic demand and diversify its source markets beyond Mercosur and North America. Looking ahead, officials have hinted that further unilateral waivers are under study—especially for Gulf and Southeast Asian states that have invested heavily in Brazilian energy and infrastructure projects. If implemented, those changes could cement Brazil’s status as South America’s most open major economy for short-term business and leisure travel.
