São Paulo exceeds two million issuances of the new National Identity Card, easing future airport ID checks
The state of São Paulo has issued more than two million copies of Brazil’s new Carteira de Identidade Nacional (CIN) in just twelve months, the state’s digital-government agency announced on 31 January. (agenciasp.sp.gov.br)

The CIN adopts the federal tax number (CPF) as the sole identifier and embeds an ICAO-compliant machine-readable zone plus a QR code, allowing the document to serve both as a domestic ID and as a travel credential for Mercosur flights. Holders can download a digital twin directly into the gov.br app—an asset that becomes critical from 31 January, when airlines must begin scanning gov.br QR codes before issuing boarding passes.

Authorities credit the milestone to expanded appointment slots at Poupatempo centres and a marketing push aimed at seniors and frequent travellers. The next phase will introduce self-service kiosks at major airports so that residents of other states can retrieve the digital version while in transit.

International visitors and corporate mobility coordinators navigating Brazil’s evolving travel documentation can simplify requirements through VisaHQ. Its dedicated Brazil portal (https://www.visahq.com/brazil/) provides real-time visa guidance, digital application tools, and concierge support that integrate smoothly with the new CIN and gov.br ecosystem, helping travellers ensure all paperwork is in order before reaching the airport.

For corporate mobility programmes, the uptake means fewer exceptions at check-in: assignees who switch to the CIN automatically receive a gov.br “gold-level” account, satisfying the new airport-identity rules. Travel departments should therefore prioritise converting employees with legacy RG cards to the new document to avoid manual processing and potential denied boarding.

The federal government is targeting nationwide CIN roll-out by 2032, but experts predict the requirement will effectively become mandatory for air travel years earlier as airlines phase out manual identity verification. (agenciasp.sp.gov.br)
