Etihad Rail Confirms 2026 Launch of UAE’s First National Passenger Train
Etihad Rail has confirmed that its long-awaited national passenger network will open to the public in late 2026, linking all seven emirates with high-speed trains capable of 200 km/h. The update was published 29 January 2026 and is the clearest timetable yet for the Gulf’s most ambitious rail project.

Phase 1 freight lines have been moving sulphur and containers since 2016, but Phase 2 lays 1,200 km of track from Fujairah Port on the Indian Ocean to Ghuwaifat on the Saudi border. Passenger services will slash journey times—Abu Dhabi to Dubai in 50 minutes and Abu Dhabi to Fujairah in 100 minutes—offering a greener alternative to the country’s car-dependent highways.

For global-mobility managers, the rail option will diversify authorised travel modes for domestic duty trips and weekend commuting by expatriate staff. Relocation specialists say affordable rail season tickets could make northern emirates more attractive housing bases for assignees who work in Abu Dhabi or Dubai but prefer lower rents farther afield.

If you’re coordinating travel or relocation to the UAE, VisaHQ can simplify the visa process with online applications, real-time status tracking and expert guidance for tourists, business travellers and dependants alike—see more at https://www.visahq.com/united-arab-emirates/ This helps ensure employees are fully documented before they hop onto the new Etihad Rail services.

Etihad Rail estimates the project will remove 8,000 truck journeys a day from roads and cut CO₂ emissions by 70-80 percent compared with equivalent car travel. Corporate sustainability teams are expected to factor the train into ESG reporting once services commence.

The operator is finalising station designs featuring airline-style lounges and seamless connections to metro, tram and bus lines. Ticket pricing has not been announced, but officials hint at dynamic fares comparable to inter-emirate bus services.
