UAE pilots biometric face-and-palm payments—future tie-in with e-gates eyed for travellers

UAE pilots biometric face-and-palm payments—future tie-in with e-gates eyed for travellers
The Central Bank of the UAE has launched the Middle East’s first nationwide biometric payment system, allowing shoppers to approve transactions with a facial scan or palm print instead of cards or phones. The pilot, announced on 28 Jan 2026, is running at selected retailers in Abu Dhabi and Dubai and will expand across the Emirates in the coming months. (timesofindia.indiatimes.com)

Although the headline is fintech, the implications for cross-border mobility are significant. Officials confirmed that the same “pay-by-face” templates being captured under the Central Bank scheme are interoperable with the Ministry of Interior’s Smart Travel initiative, which operates automated border e-gates at Dubai International (DXB) and Abu Dhabi International (AUH).

In practice, this opens the door to a seamless curb-to-gate experience for visitors and residents: one enrolment could handle duty-free payments, lounge access and e-gate immigration clearance. For business travellers, reduced reliance on physical wallets also mitigates fraud risk and foreign-exchange fees, while employers gain cleaner expense data via digital receipts.

If you want to be sure the only thing you’re thinking about at the terminal is which lounge to visit, VisaHQ can take the stress out of the paperwork. The company’s platform provides real-time guidance on UAE visa requirements, easy document uploads and tracked submissions, helping both leisure and corporate travelers secure entry clearances while their biometric profiles are being set up. Data governance remains a concern. The Central Bank says biometric templates are encrypted and stored on sovereign servers inside the UAE; however, companies should update travel-risk disclosures and obtain employee consent where corporate cards are tokenised. Compliance teams must also assess whether EU GDPR or similar extraterritorial rules apply to staff based in Europe but traveling on UAE assignments.

Early adopters include Emirates NBD and First Abu Dhabi Bank; both plan to integrate the biometric rails with existing corporate-card programmes. Mobility managers are encouraged to monitor bank communications and consider pilot enrolment for frequently travelling executives once the public rollout begins in Q2 2026.
