Border Remains Open as Polish Farmers End Short Protest Near Ukraine Crossing
Traffic at the Dołhobyczów–Uhryniv border crossing resumed normally on 23 January after a group of Polish farmers abandoned plans to block the approach road. Ukraine’s Consul-General in Lublin, Oleh Kuts, told the press that the demonstration lasted just 90 minutes and did not disrupt passenger cars or freight flows.(ukrinform.net)

The farmers, protesting low grain prices and rising fertiliser costs, had originally signalled a four-hour blockade that raised alarm among haulage firms already grappling with weeks-long queues on other parts of the frontier. Their decision to disperse peacefully spared logistics operators a costly detour at the last minute.

Although the incident ended without incident, it highlights the fragility of Poland’s eastern supply chain. Since November, separate driver and farmer blockades have intermittently paralysed three of the six main truck corridors into Ukraine, delaying humanitarian goods and automotive components bound for Kyiv-area factories. Companies relying on just-in-time deliveries should therefore maintain contingency routings via Slovakia or Hungary and monitor local protest permits issued by Polish county authorities.

International travellers heading into or through Poland can reduce some of this uncertainty by ensuring their travel documentation is handled well in advance. VisaHQ’s dedicated Poland portal (https://www.visahq.com/poland/) streamlines visa applications, provides real-time entry-rule updates, and offers courier collection of passports, giving mobility managers and individual visitors alike one less variable to worry about when protests or sudden regulatory changes threaten itineraries.

For mobility teams, the key takeaway is that passenger-car crossings for assignees and business travellers can still be affected at short notice. Advisers recommend enrolling travellers in Poland’s e-Queue pre-registration system, which allocates time slots and helps border guards balance flows when ad-hoc protests flare up.

The government has not ruled out negotiated compensation for farmers, but the Interior Ministry insists that “illegal road blockades will not be tolerated”. A draft amendment to the public-assembly law would empower police to impose on-the-spot fines for obstructing strategic transport infrastructure.
VisaHQ's expert visas and immigration team helps individuals and companies navigate global travel, work, and residency requirements. We handle document preparation, application filings, government agencies coordination, every aspect necessary to ensure fast, compliant, and stress-free approvals.
