Delta pre-emptively cancels flights in five states, issues expanded waivers for Winter Storm Fern
Delta Air Lines provided a detailed operational update on the afternoon of January 22 as Winter Storm Fern bore down on the South-Central United States. The carrier has canceled an unspecified number of flights at airports in North Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee for January 23–24 and warned of likely disruptions at its Atlanta mega-hub.

To reduce customer inconvenience, Delta automatically rebooked affected passengers onto the next available flights and extended its waiver to 41 airports, including Atlanta, Dallas–Fort Worth, Nashville and Memphis. Travelers may change origin or destination within the waiver region without fees or fare differences if they keep the same cabin and travel by January 29.

If your shuffled itinerary suddenly involves an international leg—or even just a longer layover that bumps up against passport validity rules—VisaHQ can streamline the paperwork. With fast, online processing for U.S. travelers at https://www.visahq.com/united-states/, the service handles renewals, new visas, and country-specific documentation so weather-related disruptions don’t snowball into documentation headaches.

Delta is also flying de-icing and ramp specialists from northern hubs into the Southeast to bolster local crews—a practice honed during the past two severe-weather seasons. Corporate travel departments should note that Delta’s contract of carriage still requires travelers to check in for the new itinerary; failure to do so can trigger no-show penalties even when the original flight was canceled.

Meteorologists expect Fern to merge with Arctic air and track toward the Mid-Atlantic on Sunday, threatening cascading schedule disruptions. Mobility planners should monitor waiver expansions and consider rerouting through unaffected hubs such as Los Angeles or Seattle.
VisaHQ's expert visas and immigration team helps individuals and companies navigate global travel, work, and residency requirements. We handle document preparation, application filings, government agencies coordination, every aspect necessary to ensure fast, compliant, and stress-free approvals.
