Brazil’s Viracopos airport courts long-haul airlines at Madrid’s FITUR to cut assignee transit times

São Paulo-Campinas/Viracopos International Airport (VCP) will send a senior delegation to Madrid’s FITUR trade fair (21–25 January) to pitch up to 75 % fee discounts for new long-haul routes. Commercial chief Sérgio Joau told reporters on 14 January that more than 30 meetings with European, North-American and Middle-Eastern carriers are already confirmed.

Viracopos handled a record 13 million passengers in 2025 but still operates below slot capacity. A nonstop to Spain could shave at least three hours off door-to-door journeys for corporate assignees heading to Brazil’s interior automotive and agribusiness corridor, compared with the congested transfer at São Paulo-Guarulhos. The timing is strategic: GRU will undergo major runway repairs in Q3 2026, and companies are eager for redundant routing.

While airlines evaluate the commercial viability of the route, travel teams should also prepare for the documentation side of trips. VisaHQ’s online portal (https://www.visahq.com/spain/) helps organizations streamline Schengen visa applications, track status updates in real time, and access expert support—ensuring staff can move quickly once a VCP-Madrid nonstop becomes reality.

Spanish trade officials view the pitch as mutually beneficial. A direct VCP-Madrid service would strengthen Iberia’s Latin-American network and support Spain’s growing expatriate community in Brazil. For mobility managers, new frequencies translate into greater duty-of-care flexibility and potentially lower airfares once competition increases.

Route announcements are unlikely before the Routes Americas forum in March, but travel-policy teams should monitor global distribution systems for test filings. Should the talks succeed, employers may wish to update preferred-airport matrices and negotiate corporate fares early.
