Spain’s airports brace for record-breaking 10,943 flights over first weekend of 2026

Spain’s airports brace for record-breaking 10,943 flights over first weekend of 2026
Spain’s airport operator Aena has confirmed that its 46-airport network will manage 10,943 commercial flights between Saturday 3 January and Sunday 4 January, the highest volume ever handled during the opening weekend of a calendar year. Madrid-Barajas tops the list with 2,161 scheduled movements, followed by Barcelona-El Prat (1,831) and Málaga–Costa del Sol (873).

The surge is being driven by two converging factors: the post-holiday “Operación Retorno” as residents return home before the 6 January Epiphany public holiday, and robust inbound leisure demand from the UK, Germany and France. Low-cost carriers Vueling and Ryanair have each added double-digit capacity versus 2025, while Iberia has upgraded selected European rotations to wide-body A330s to accommodate extra baggage and cargo.

Airport managers say the unprecedented traffic will be a real-time test of the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), which is now live at Spain’s largest hubs. Barajas is operating 120 biometric kiosks and 60 e-gates; Málaga has 48 kiosks, and Barcelona 72. Travellers from non-EU countries—including the UK and the United States—must record fingerprints and facial images on first entry, a process that adds 30-60 seconds per passenger. Aena has deployed 350 extra “blue-vest” agents to guide passengers through the new formalities and prevent bottlenecks.

Travellers who are uncertain about whether they need a Schengen visa—or how the new EES data capture might interact with their documentation—can simplify the process through VisaHQ, an online visa and passport service that provides up-to-the-minute guidance for Spain and 200 other destinations. Its Spain portal (https://www.visahq.com/spain/) lets users check requirements, complete application forms and arrange courier pickup in minutes, reducing the risk of last-minute airport surprises.

Business-travel analysts welcome the capacity boost, noting that many multinationals schedule kick-off meetings in Madrid and Barcelona during the second week of January. Corporations are advising mobile employees to arrive at the airport at least three hours before departure and to carry printed proof of onward travel if they plan to combine business with leisure days.

For mobility managers, the record weekend underscores the importance of proactive travel-risk monitoring. Although weather forecasts are benign, any technical glitch in the still-maturing EES could cause knock-on delays across the Schengen network. Companies are urged to keep contingency budgets for overnight accommodation and to use real-time visa-status tools so that travellers do not miss flights because of documentation issues.
