Bangkok–Kolkata route gets new entrant as Vietjet Thailand begins four-weekly service

Bangkok–Kolkata route gets new entrant as Vietjet Thailand begins four-weekly service
Vietjet Thailand operated its inaugural Bangkok Suvarnabhumi–Kolkata flight on 3 January 2026, landing at 22:30 IST after a two-hour-fifty-minute sector. The launch, originally slated for mid-November, was delayed by aircraft-availability issues but now adds a sixth competitor to the busy Indo-Thai market. Flights will arrive in Kolkata every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, returning to Bangkok in the early hours of the following day.

While IndiGo, Thai Airways, Lion Air, Bhutan Airlines and Thai AirAsia already serve the city-pair, Vietjet’s entry is notable because it offers a three-cabin layout (Business, Premium Economy and Economy) unheard of among low-cost carriers on the route. Promotional round-trip fares start at ₹13 999 inclusive of 20 kg baggage—likely to trigger a fare war ahead of the Holi and Songkran travel peaks.

For Indian corporates with regional hubs in Bangkok or Eastern Economic Corridor industrial parks, the new service provides additional seat capacity and schedule flexibility. Thai authorities recorded a 54 % jump in Indian business-visitor arrivals in 2025 after lifting most pandemic-era restrictions; easier connectivity is expected to push numbers higher, especially among SME exporters from eastern India.

Travel-management companies say Kolkata now has direct links to 12 international destinations, strengthening its case as an alternative to Delhi or Mumbai for East-Asia bound traffic. However, passengers transiting onward within Thailand should watch connection times; the late-night return leg reaches Bangkok just before the airport’s peak outbound bank.

For travellers unsure about visa paperwork or the mandatory e-Arrival registration, VisaHQ’s India portal (https://www.visahq.com/india/) offers step-by-step assistance, real-time status tracking and the option to bundle compliant travel insurance—an easy way to sidestep last-minute documentation snags before boarding the new Vietjet service.

From a mobility-compliance standpoint, travellers must still complete Thailand’s e-Arrival form and carry proof of insurance covering at least USD 10 000 for medical emergencies—requirements that caught many Indian travellers off-guard during 2025’s year-end holiday rush.
