Europe’s New ETIAS Will Apply to Brazilians From Late 2026

Europe’s New ETIAS Will Apply to Brazilians From Late 2026
The European Commission has confirmed that travellers from visa-exempt countries—including Brazil—must obtain electronic authorisation under the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) before visiting the Schengen Area from late 2026. The €7 application is valid for three years and multiple entries, but carriers will be fined if passengers board without an approved pass, making advance compliance critical.

Although ETIAS has been delayed three times, Brussels now says technical testing is complete and a six-month grace period will begin once the launch date is formally published in the EU’s Official Journal. Border officers will scan passports against the ETIAS database, which cross-checks Interpol, Europol and health alerts within seconds. Brazilian passport holders already account for 1.9 million Schengen entries annually—a figure expected to rise with the return of corporate events and “bleisure” travel.

For travellers and corporate mobility managers who prefer expert assistance, VisaHQ offers an end-to-end ETIAS service that will notify users the moment registrations open and guide them through each step of the application. Brazilian citizens can pre-register for updates at https://www.visahq.com/brazil/, helping them stay compliant and avoid last-minute surprises once the new rules take effect.

For mobility managers the change means re-calibrating lead times. While ETIAS approval is typically instant, up to 3 percent of applicants will be routed for manual review that can take 30 days. Companies should build ETIAS checks into pre-trip workflows alongside ESTA for the U.S. and Canada’s eTA.

Data-privacy lawyers note that ETIAS will store biometric and travel-history data for five years after the last trip, raising questions about GDPR compliance for firms that centrally manage employees’ applications. HR teams should update consent language and archiving protocols accordingly.

On the upside, ETIAS could speed up border crossings. The Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) estimates that e-gates paired with ETIAS will cut average entry processing at Lisbon Airport by 20 seconds per traveller—no small gain during summer peaks.
