China Southern Raises Sydney–Guangzhou to Three Daily Flights, Boosting Seat Capacity by 125 000
Sydney Airport received an early Christmas present on 22 December when China Southern Airlines confirmed it will lift its Sydney–Guangzhou service to an all-time high of three daily flights year-round. The upgrade, effective from the 2026 Northern Summer season, adds 420 return flights and nearly 125,000 seats in each direction, making Sydney the carrier’s largest Oceania market.

The move reflects surging two-way demand: Chinese visitor expenditure in New South Wales jumped 31 % to AU$305 million in the year to September 2025, while NSW exports to China grew 82 % to AU$3.5 billion. For exporters, the extra belly-hold capacity will improve freight reliability and cut lead times for perishables and high-value goods.

Business-travel buyers stand to gain from greater fare competition on the busy Sino-Australian corridor, where seats remain tight despite the full restoration of pre-pandemic capacity by most mainland carriers. China Southern’s hub in Guangzhou connects to more than 220 Chinese and international destinations, offering new one-stop options into secondary Chinese cities.

The additional flights coincide with Sydney Airport’s busiest international season on record, with 2.7 million international passengers expected over the Christmas–New Year peak. Mobility managers should advise travellers to arrive earlier than usual and to leverage SmartGate e-Passport facilities where eligible.

Airport CEO Geoff Culbert welcomed the announcement as “a significant vote of confidence” in Sydney’s recovery and underscored the importance of the Chinese market for tourism and trade. Slot-coordination discussions are under way to ensure that the extra daily frequency can be accommodated during curfew-constrained periods.
