China Opens Online Visa Application to Indians in Bid to Tap US$21 Bn Market
Beijing will allow Indian nationals to file Chinese visa applications entirely online from 22 December, the Chinese embassy in New Delhi confirmed in a circular referenced by the South China Morning Post on 21 December. The change removes the requirement for an initial in-person visit to a visa centre, cutting processing time for business travellers and tourists alike.

Economic rationale: India’s outbound travel spend hit US$21.6 billion in 2024 and is projected to triple by 2033. Before the pandemic, Indian visitor arrivals to China were growing at 19 % a year, but numbers collapsed after the 2020 Himalayan border clash and Beijing’s zero-Covid restrictions. With direct flights between Delhi/Mumbai and Shanghai/Guangzhou restored in October, easing the visa bottleneck is the next step toward normalising people-to-people exchanges.

What changes for applicants: From 22 December travellers can complete the visa form, upload documents and pay fees via China’s new Consular Services portal. Fingerprinting and photo capture will still occur on the day of collection, but appointment slots have been increased to handle expected demand. The online system will initially accept L (tourist), M (business) and F (exchange) categories, with work (Z) visas to follow next quarter.

Travellers feeling uncertain about the paperwork can tap VisaHQ’s expertise: its dedicated China section (https://www.visahq.com/china/) offers step-by-step guidance on document uploads, payment methods and appointment booking, and its support team is adept at resolving the glitches that sometimes crop up on the Consular Services portal.

Business impact: Indian pharmaceutical and IT companies with facilities in Hangzhou and Suzhou anticipate faster rotation of project teams, while Chinese automotive suppliers eyeing the Indian market can invite potential customers to Shanghai trade fairs with less lead time. Travel agencies expect pent-up leisure demand during the April holiday season once e-visa functionality is stable.

Geopolitical overtones: Although strategic rivalry persists, analysts see the move as part of incremental confidence-building. Both sides have reopened military-to-military hotlines and revived discussions on a rupee-renminbi settlement corridor that could eventually facilitate easier cross-border payments for tourists.
