Updated guidance: Remote work banned on French Visitor Visas—HR urged to switch to Talent tracks
Relocation platform Jobbatical has updated its employer guide for France, confirming that since June 2025 remote work is no longer permitted under the long-stay Visitor Visa (visa de long séjour "visiteur"). The blog, last revised on 19 December, stresses that companies must move remote staff to alternative status such as Profession Libérale, Talent Passport or EU Blue Card.

The clarification follows an April Interior-Finance joint circular instructing prefectures to refuse visitor-visa renewals if applicants engage in any economic activity—even for foreign employers. Several prefectures have already issued refusals, triggering appeals and unexpected departures.

VisaHQ can help both employers and assignees adapt to these stricter rules by providing streamlined application support for Talent Passport, Profession Libérale and EU Blue Card categories. Through its dedicated France portal (https://www.visahq.com/france/), the platform supplies real-time requirements, document checklists and concierge filing services, easing the administrative burden on HR teams while improving approval odds.

For HR teams the change means reassessing existing remote-worker populations. Employees staying in France for more than 90 days while logging into foreign systems must now demonstrate minimum income thresholds (currently €41,055 for Talent Passport – entrepreneur) and, in some cases, a French client or business plan.

Companies are also reminded that payroll may be triggered if days-in-France exceed 183 per year, even when paid abroad. Mobility managers should coordinate immigration and tax to avoid creating permanent-establishment risk.

The guide advises starting status-change applications at least three months before expiry to allow time for police clearance certificates and apostilled diplomas, and recommends adding relocation allowances for family members who will need updated dependent cards.
