Spain rescues 403 migrants in two boats off El Hierro within 12 hours
Salvamento Marítimo, Spain’s coast-guard agency, intercepted two overloaded *cayucos* carrying 403 people in waters just four nautical miles from the port of La Restinga (island of El Hierro) between Friday evening (28 November) and the early hours of Saturday (29 November). The rescue underscores the continuing pressure on maritime borders even as overall Atlantic arrivals have slowed in 2025.

According to the Tenerife Rescue Coordination Centre, the first alert came at 19:45 when the patrol boat *Salvamar Navia* spotted lights on the horizon. A second vessel was located by air surveillance shortly afterwards. Both wooden boats had departed eight to ten days earlier from the Senegalese coast, survivors told aid workers. On board were 41 women and nine minors; several people showed signs of dehydration but no hospital transfers were required. All occupants were moved to El Hierro’s temporary reception facility, already operating above its 440-person capacity.

Although migrant sea crossings to the Canary Islands have fallen 53 % year-on-year, El Hierro has become the archipelago’s main landfall because of currents and smuggler routes. Canary Islands president Fernando Clavijo renewed demands for “urgent solidarity transfers” to mainland Spain to avoid bottlenecks that can delay asylum registration and onward relocation for weeks.

For global mobility managers, the incident is a reminder that Spain’s humanitarian reception system remains under strain and that ad-hoc movement restrictions (such as temporary closure of El Hierro’s fast-ferry dock for health screenings) can disrupt passenger flows. Companies moving staff through the Canaries should monitor local transport advisories and allow extra connection time, especially for flights from Tenerife North and Gran Canaria that routinely handle overflow transfers from El Hierro.
