To bolster surveillance along Rajasthan’s 1,070-km frontier with Pakistan, state Director-General of Police Rajeev Kumar Sharma has ordered that all existing border-zone CCTV cameras be networked to district-level control rooms, with new units to be installed in Barmer, Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Sri Ganganagar. The directive was issued during a statewide law-and-order review on 20 November.
Live feeds will give local commanders real-time situational awareness and faster response capability during infiltration attempts or cross-border smuggling incidents. The upgrade complements the central government’s Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS), which deploys thermal sensors and fibre optic fences along critical stretches.
While the initiative is primarily security-driven, it has downstream implications for mobility. Enhanced monitoring is expected to reduce road closures on NH-68 and NH-70—key arteries used by wind-energy and mining firms moving equipment to border districts. The police also plan to extend CCTV coverage to tourist hotspots in Jaisalmer ahead of the peak season, reassuring inbound tour operators.
Companies with expatriate staff on short-term assignments near the frontier should brief drivers about additional checkpoints during the roll-out phase but can expect faster incident response once the network stabilises.
