Volotea crew strike in Italy adds turbulence for Spanish carrier’s holiday schedules

Volotea crew strike in Italy adds turbulence for Spanish carrier’s holiday schedules
Spanish low-cost airline Volotea faces an all-day strike by its Italian-based pilots and cabin crew on Friday, 14 November, potentially disrupting services between Spain and 15 Italian cities. The UILT-UIL union accuses the company of refusing to recognise union representation and of offering contracts below industry standards.

Although the walkout is confined to Italy, roughly one-third of the 320 flights scheduled for the day are Spain-Italy rotations that feed Spanish hubs in Bilbao, Asturias and Alicante. Volotea has warned passengers of “significant delays and some cancellations”, advising them to rebook at no charge or request refunds.

Business-travel managers with tight connection windows should note that Italian air-traffic-control staff will hold a separate four-hour stoppage, compounding delays. Barcelona brokerage ForwardKeys estimates that 18,000 seats involving Spanish airports are at risk.

Labour unrest within European carriers remains a headache for corporate itineraries this winter. Spanish flag-carrier Iberia recently concluded wage talks that averted a Christmas strike, but ground-handling staff at Madrid-Barajas are still threatening action over staffing levels linked to the new biometric gates.

For Volotea, which has been expanding aggressively into domestic Spanish routes vacated by Ryanair, the dispute highlights the complexity of managing trans-border labour relations. Mobility teams should monitor notifications and, where possible, shift travellers to Vueling or Iberia on overlapping routes.
