India’s Air Chief Marshal A. P. Singh on 13 November 2025 landed a C-130J transport aircraft at the newly built Mudh-Nyoma Air Force Station in eastern Ladakh, formally inaugurating the Himalayan airfield barely 30 km from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. At 13,000 ft, the base can support fighter operations and is India’s third advanced landing ground in the region, complementing Daulat Beg Oldie and Fukche.

While primarily a defence project, the installation has wider mobility ramifications. The upgraded runway and terminal facilities will allow quick air-lift of border-management personnel, surveillance drones and disaster-relief teams, reducing dependence on the seasonally vulnerable Darbuk–Shyok–Daulat Beg Oldie road. Analysts say improved air logistics could also enable limited charter flights for scientific expeditions and high-altitude infrastructure workers under special border-area permits.

Government officials frame the base as part of a broader strategy to match China’s rapid infrastructure build-up across the LAC and to deter incursions. The move follows the October 2024 confidence-building agreement that eased frontline tension but allowed both sides to continue developing infrastructure on their respective territories.

For global mobility managers, the development underscores the continuing sensitivity of travel to India’s northern border districts. Foreign nationals still require Inner Line Permits, and companies operating in Ladakh must obtain Ministry of Home Affairs clearances for satellite phones, heavy equipment and foreign employees. The faster aerial deployment capability could mean shorter notice for sudden restriction orders if tensions flare.

Security experts recommend that organisations update their India travel-risk assessments, maintain traveller tracking for Ladakh visits and build contingency plans for rapid evacuation via the new base should commercial flights to Leh be disrupted.
