Sheikh Mohammed spotlights Dubai Metro as backbone of urban mobility
Dubai’s Ruler, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, used his X (formerly Twitter) account on 8 November 2025 to share a short video portraying a "typical day" on Dubai Metro. The post, carried by Khaleej Times Arabic, praised the system’s punctuality, cleanliness and multicultural ridership as a mirror of the city’s progress and discipline.

Opened in 2009 and now carrying an average of 850,000 passengers daily (over one million on peak event days), the driverless metro has become the spine of commuter life, linking business districts, residential hubs and tourist attractions from the airport to Expo City. Sheikh Mohammed’s message – "Do you want to know how civilised a nation is? Look at its systems, its cleanliness and the ethics of its people" – underlined the leadership’s view that high-quality public transport is integral to Dubai’s competitiveness as a global business centre.

The video coincides with ongoing work to extend the Red Line to Al Maktoum International Airport and a planned Green Line spur to Dubai Silicon Oasis, projects that will add 37 km of track by 2028. For employers relocating staff to Dubai, the metro’s expansion broadens housing options within a 45-minute commute of major free zones, reducing reliance on private vehicles and ride-hailing.

Urban-mobility analysts note that the Metro has also become a selling point in corporate sustainability reports, allowing multinationals to quantify Scope-3 emission reductions from employee commuting.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) reiterated its 2030 target of shifting 30 % of all journeys to public transport and soft-mobility modes – a goal that will require further integration of last-mile e-scooters, cycling tracks and bus feeders to new stations.
