Cathay Pacific marks 40 years on Rome–Hong Kong route with extra frequencies and new cabins
Cathay Pacific chose Rome Fiumicino Airport on 11 April 2026 to celebrate two milestones: the airline’s 80th corporate anniversary and the 40th anniversary of its first direct Italy–Hong Kong service in April 1986. An Airbus A350-900 sporting a retro ‘lettuce-leaf’ livery touched down to inaugurate an expanded summer schedule that lifts Rome-Hong Kong flights to four per week and introduces the carrier’s new ‘Aria Suite’ Business Class on selected rotations. For Italian exporters and Asia-Pacific procurement teams the extra capacity is welcome. Before the pandemic, bilateral trade exceeded €14 billion, but limited belly-hold cargo space has hampered recovery. Cathay says the additional frequencies restore 95 % of pre-Covid seat capacity and add 70 tonnes of weekly cargo lift—enough to accommodate high-value fashion and pharmaceutical shipments bound for the Greater Bay Area.

Business and leisure travellers should also plan ahead for immigration formalities. VisaHQ’s streamlined portal (https://www.visahq.com/hong-kong/) helps Italian passport holders and third-country nationals secure the right Hong Kong visas or entry permits, offering real-time requirement updates, document checks and courier support—ideal for cargo managers, fashion buyers and MICE delegates eager to make the most of Cathay’s added capacity.

On the passenger side, the upgraded cabin product—and free inflight Wi-Fi across all classes—targets premium leisure and corporate segments. Rome joins Milan in offering the Aria Suite, giving Italian corporates two daily or near-daily nonstop options into Hong Kong once the summer schedule stabilises. Travel buyers should audit contracted fares: Cathay has hinted at a modest premium (about 8 %) for Aria-equipped flights. The anniversary underscores Hong Kong International Airport’s rebound strategy: rebuild long-haul links while nurturing Europe-Asia conventions. With Hong Kong hosting Art Basel and multiple trade fairs this quarter, easier access from Italy is expected to lift visitor arrivals in the high-spend MICE segment. Cathay also previewed partnership talks with ITA Airways to improve feed from secondary Italian cities via Rome. If realised, through-check-in and aligned frequent-flyer accrual would simplify mobility for engineers and executives shuttling between satellite plants in northern Italy and manufacturing bases in the Pearl River Delta.
