DiscoverEU opens new application round: free rail passes for Austrian 18-year-olds
The Federal Chancellery announced that the European Commission’s spring application window for the popular DiscoverEU scheme opened at midday on 8 April 2026 and will run until 22 April. Every Austrian who turns 18 between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026 can apply for one of thousands of free Interrail-style passes that allow up to seven days of train travel anywhere in the EU, plus Iceland, Norway, Türkiye and several Western-Balkan partner states. While the programme targets youth mobility rather than corporate travel, HR departments of multinational companies in Austria increasingly view DiscoverEU as a talent-branding opportunity. Several large employers—including an Austrian semiconductor manufacturer and a global beverage group headquartered in Vienna—have in the past offered interns additional paid leave to use the pass, citing the intercultural competences and rail-travel planning skills participants gain.

If trip planning inspires you to tack on further journeys beyond Europe’s Schengen Area, VisaHQ’s Austria portal (https://www.visahq.com/austria/) can simplify the paperwork. The service quickly shows whether onward destinations require visas, processes e-visa applications for more than 200 countries and provides a live status dashboard—handy for HR teams mentoring DiscoverEU interns as well as for seasoned business travellers.

This year’s call is the first to fall within the lead-up to the full rollout of the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) on 10 April 2026. Because EES will end passport stamping for non-EU citizens, rail operators expect smoother controls for pass holders crossing external Schengen borders. Applicants must upload a scan of a valid Austrian passport or ID card and complete a short EU-themed quiz; successful candidates become “DiscoverEU Ambassadors” and will be encouraged to report their journeys on social media. For travel-management professionals the message is clear: peak youth demand for cross-Europe rail segments is likely to rise between July 2026 and September 2027—the period during which the new passes must be used. Companies booking group tickets for relocation orientations or graduate programmes may face tighter capacity on key routes such as Vienna–Berlin and Salzburg–Milan during school holidays. Early block-booking is advisable.
