Four-hour nationwide air-traffic-control strike to disrupt Italian flights on 10 April

Four-hour nationwide air-traffic-control strike to disrupt Italian flights on 10 April
Barely 48 hours after fuel rationing began, Italy’s aviation sector is bracing for another headache: a four-hour national strike by air-traffic-control provider ENAV and technology subsidiary Techno Sky. The walk-out, called by a coalition of unions including UILTrasporti, FAST-Confsal and Astra, will run from 13:00 to 17:00 local time on Friday 10 April. The stoppage affects Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino, Milan Malpensa, Naples Capodichino and the en-route area-control centres that manage overflights across Italian airspace. ENAC, Italy’s civil-aviation regulator, will publish a list of “guaranteed flights” covering medical evacuations, state aircraft and a skeleton of long-haul services, but hundreds of short-haul rotations are likely to be delayed or cancelled. Unions say the strike is over workload and staffing concerns made worse by the Hormuz-induced fuel crisis, which is forcing controllers to handle a wave of diversion requests and last-minute flight-plan changes. They also oppose what they call “unilateral” roster reforms linked to the roll-out of the EU’s new Digital Sky traffic-management platform.

For mobility managers the timing is awkward: 10 April falls in the middle of spring conference season and just ahead of Italy’s Liberation Day holiday window. United Airlines, Lufthansa and ITA Airways have already issued travel waivers allowing date changes between 8 and 16 April. Travellers with tight onward connections—or with Schengen visa validity tied to fixed itineraries—should consider rerouting via France, Austria or Switzerland, where no industrial action is scheduled.

If itinerary changes mean your Schengen visa will expire before you can complete your trip, VisaHQ can help secure a fast renewal or extension. Their dedicated Italy page (https://www.visahq.com/italy/) walks you through the latest consular procedures, required documentation and appointment slots, letting travellers and corporate mobility teams stay compliant even when strikes wreak havoc on schedules.

Past experience suggests residual delays could persist into the evening peak even after controllers return to their posts. Companies are advised to keep employees informed via traveller-tracking tools and to remind staff that EU261 compensation does not apply to strikes deemed an “extraordinary circumstance,” although carriers must still provide care and rebooking.
