Plug and Play launches Cyprus Innovation Centre to attract global start-up talent
Cyprus took a decisive step toward branding itself a tech-talent magnet on 8 April with the inauguration of the Plug and Play Cyprus Innovation Centre at the presidential palace in Nicosia. The Silicon Valley accelerator—whose alumni include PayPal, Dropbox and Rappi—now spans more than 60 locations worldwide; Cyprus becomes the latest node in that network. The centre will run six acceleration rounds over the next three years, targeting about 60 early-stage companies in fintech, maritime tech and sustainable tourism. Organisers expect the programme to create roughly 500 high-skilled jobs on the island and, crucially, to funnel foreign founders and mentors into the country under Cyprus’ fast-track Start-up Visa and Digital Nomad schemes. The government has pledged expedited residence-permit processing and a dedicated liaison desk at the Civil Registry & Migration Department for cohorts selected by Plug and Play.

Entrepreneurs and digital nomads planning to seize these opportunities can simplify the often-complex visa process through VisaHQ’s dedicated Cyprus portal (https://www.visahq.com/cyprus/). The service walks applicants through each step of the Start-up Visa, Digital Nomad scheme or even short-term business entry, handling document checks, appointment scheduling and real-time status updates so founders can focus on their pitch decks rather than paperwork.

For multinational enterprises already embedded in Plug and Play’s corporate-partner network, the Cypriot hub provides a convenient Eastern-Mediterranean landing pad. Executives can mentor start-ups during week-long “dealflow” sessions without the need for Schengen visas—another competitive edge given Cyprus’ non-Schengen status. Relocation advisers point out that founders from the US, Israel and the Gulf can leverage the 60-day tax residency rule to minimise global personal taxation while scaling their ventures. Pro-business groups nonetheless warn that success hinges on smoother family-reunification procedures. At present, spouses of third-country entrepreneurs must secure separate work permits, a hurdle Cyprus Invest has promised to address via amendments expected in Parliament by July. Meanwhile, real-estate developers are positioning co-living facilities in Nicosia and Limassol to capture incoming digital workers, with monthly rents bundled to include visas, healthcare registration and school liaison. If the model follows Plug and Play’s playbook in Spain and Japan, Cyprus could see an influx of venture-capital scouts and corporate innovation teams rotating through the island, deepening its global-mobility ecosystem and diversifying an economy still heavily reliant on tourism and shipping.
