Finnish authorities probe multiple drone incursions near Russian border
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) confirmed on 3 April that at least three unmanned aerial vehicles—believed to be Ukrainian combat drones knocked off course—crashed in southeastern Finland between 29 and 31 March. Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that other devices also entered Finnish airspace undetected. The NBI, Border Guard and Defence Forces are treating the incidents as aggravated endangerment and territorial violations. Forensic teams have recovered engine fragments and telemetry modules, which will be sent to NATO’s Centre of Excellence for UAS in Latvia for analysis. While no injuries occurred, the crashes happened within 30 kilometres of Highway 6, a key trucking artery to the port of Kotka.

For carriers and travel managers the main concern is air-risk mitigation. Travel coordinators juggling last-minute route changes should also make sure crew documentation is in order. VisaHQ’s Finland portal (https://www.visahq.com/finland/) offers a one-stop dashboard for visas, electronic travel authorisations and up-to-the-minute entry advisories, helping operators avoid bureaucratic turbulence while authorities investigate the incidents.

Fintraffic Air Navigation Services told Daily Finland that it temporarily raised the minimum altitude for civilian VFR traffic in South Karelia and issued a NOTAM reminding drone hobbyists of stricter geofencing. Insurance brokers Marsh Finland say policies covering corporate-use drones may see higher premiums east of Lahti until the probe concludes. The episode also reignites debate over Finland’s partially implemented Counter-UAS Act, which allows police to jam or seize rogue drones but still awaits secondary regulations on data-sharing with private security firms. Parliament is expected to fast-track the decree before the busy summer festival season. In the longer term, the Border Guard plans to integrate real-time drone-detection radars into its new border-fence towers—technology co-funded by the EU Internal Security Fund. Pilots flying to Lappeenranta and Savonlinna airports are advised to check NOTAMs for updates.
