Drone threat ripple: Cyprus sees last-minute flight cancellations and tightened airport security
Several European airlines cancelled or rerouted flights to Cyprus over the weekend of 22–23 March after renewed drone-related alerts near the U.K.’s Akrotiri base. Short air-space freezes, higher insurance premiums and crew-safety rules drove a spike in package-tour cancellations, pushing coastal-hotel occupancy down to 40 percent. The Civil Aviation Authority stresses that airports remain open, but travel-risk consultancies have raised Cyprus to ‘moderate-risk’ status, urging companies to activate contingency plans. The incident shows how geopolitical spill-over can quickly disrupt business travel and assignment programmes—even within the EU.
